How to fish it · for sea trout
When
Reo season 1 May to 31 July — short, rainfall-dependent window. Fish enter on a rising tide and rain; June and July catches peak. Stocks in documented decline — local guidance is essential.
Where
Lower Tambre reaches and the Noia estuary. Pool tails and tidal margins where reo settle on the run.
Method
Across-and-down on a floating line with small wets — Medicine, Stoat's Tail, small Bibio. Fish the rising tide and the dropping water after rain. Treat the Tambre as a heritage fishery — release with care.
Kit
10 ft #6/7, floating line, 8 lb fluoro tippet. Spare leader on a wrist spool. Galician fishing licence with migratory species fee where applicable.
Why this works
Good conditions. Temperature is favourable (85), Prey activity is weakest (31). ⏰ Sea trout become most active after dark, but this stretch closes at 20:25 — before that window fully opens. Fish hard in the last legal hour: overcast skies and warm evenings can bring fish on early even in fading light.

About this water

The Tambre is a heritage salmon river flowing to the Noia ría, but salmon are now depleted and out of bounds. Its present practical value is as a granite spate river with brown trout in the steeper upper water and sea trout in the lower river and estuarine reaches. The 8-hour response time makes it attractive after rainfall, and the river still carries real migratory-fish atmosphere even though active salmon fishing should not be part of trip planning.

Sea trout: Variable seasonal (2026) — Reo (Galician sea trout) present in lower Tambre reaches. Salmon banned 2026. Sea trout are a secondary quarry on this heritage salmon river — present and occasionally taken but not a reliable primary target. Local knowledge essential.

Salmon: Heritage only (2026) — Salmon fishing banned in Galicia by 2026 Xunta decree. Heritage salmon river — not a salmon fishing destination.
