How to fish it · for sea trout
When
Reo season 1 May to 31 July. Fish enter on a rising tide and rain; the Mandeo is small and rainfall-dependent. Stocks fragile — don't oversell the river to yourself.
Where
Lower Mandeo and the Betanzos estuary. Pool tails and the tidal margins where reo settle on the run.
Method
Across-and-down on a floating line with small wets. Time the rising tide; fish the dropping water after rain. Catch-and-release recommended on this fragile residual fishery.
Kit
10 ft #6, floating line, 8 lb fluoro tippet. Spare leader on a wrist spool.
Why this works
Good conditions. Clarity is favourable (85), Prey activity is weakest (25). ⏰ Sea trout become most active after dark, but this stretch closes at 20:24 — before that window fully opens. Fish hard in the last legal hour: overcast skies and warm evenings can bring fish on early even in fading light.

About this water

A compact, highly responsive heritage salmon river near Betanzos where salmon are now depleted and out of bounds. Smaller than the Ulla or Tambre, it still offers concentrated trout-and-sea-trout fishing, especially after rain, with a quick 5-hour response that can create short but worthwhile windows. Sea trout in the lower river and estuary now make more practical sense than any salmon-led framing.

Sea trout: Variable seasonal (2026) — Reo present in the lower Mandeo and estuary. Salmon depleted and prohibited. Sea trout are a residual fishery — occasional, water-dependent, not a promoted primary species.

Salmon: Heritage only (2026) — Salmon fishing banned in Galicia by 2026 Xunta decree. Heritage salmon river — not a salmon fishing destination.
