The plan
Plan A

Set up a broadside drift and cover the water systematically. Work a bushy searching pattern on the bob and drop a contrasting nymph on the point. Keep a sedge-style dry or emerger on a short leader for the evening rise.

Plan B

If the main plan is not working, switch to a smaller, more imitative pattern fished slower and deeper. A change of drift angle can also make a difference.

Watch for

Watch for Sedge towards evening — this could be the best window of the day.

About this water

Llynnau'r Cwn is really three pools, not one lake, and it pays to know which is which before you start walking the bank. The top pool is peaty, dark, and presumed fishless — nobody bothers with it, and neither should you. The lower two are a different matter, holding wild brown trout to around a pound and a half and fishing considerably better for the fact that most visitors never get past the first pool to find out. Worth the extra fifteen minutes to reach the water that actually holds fish, and worth remembering which pool is which on the way back.
