How to fish it · for Trout
When
Late April–June; evening rises through summer
Where
Set up a broadside drift and cover the water systematically. Work a bushy searching pattern on the bob and drop a contrasting nymph on the point. Keep a sedge-style dry or emerger on a short leader for the evening rise.
The plan
Plan A

Set up a broadside drift and cover the water systematically. Work a bushy searching pattern on the bob and drop a contrasting nymph on the point. Keep a sedge-style dry or emerger on a short leader for the evening rise.

Plan B

If the main plan is not working, switch to a smaller, more imitative pattern fished slower and deeper. A change of drift angle can also make a difference.

Watch for

Evening tends to be the best period in summer — stay late if you can for a sedge or spinner fall.

About this water

Gamallt Fawr and Bach are two lakes joined at the hip and, by the club's own reckoning, the jewels of the whole portfolio — a reputation the stock actually backs up. It's the strongest water in this book by most accounts, and Cambrian AA protect it accordingly with a three-fish bag limit, an unusual restriction for a portfolio otherwise run on fairly relaxed terms. Fish the linking narrows between the two pools when you can, and don't be surprised if this ends up the water you keep coming back to. Premium reputations get earned around here, not handed out, and Gamallt has clearly earned this one.

Why this score
  • Wind conditions (ripple) closely match what this water fishes best in.
  • Sedge is in its seasonal window, boosting the chance of targeted feeding.
