About this water

The Tauranga-Taupō — the 'TT' — is one of the best of the eastern Taupō run rivers: a clean, quick freestone draining the Kaimanawa, with good holding pools that fill with lake-run rainbows behind every fresh through the winter and spring. Classic Taupō nymphing water — read the level, time your visit to the falling, clearing flow after rain, and fish weighted nymphs through the runs.

Under the surface

The Tauranga-Taupō drains the Kaimanawa ranges and runs north-west to the eastern shore of Lake Taupō, a quick, clean freestone river of pumice and greywacke that rises and falls with the mountain rain. It is one of the great winter run rivers of the district, its pools filling with lake rainbows behind every fresh.

Wading: Flashy rises after mountain rain, shifting gravel — watch the level

Hatches & food

Early-summer evenings bring a caddis rise, and cicadas and passion-vine hoppers add a midsummer terrestrial fall — timing here rests on practical fishing guides rather than published monitoring, so treat the exact months as a good working estimate.
