The Tauranga-Taupō — the 'TT' — is one of the best of the eastern Taupō run rivers: a clean, quick freestone draining the Kaimanawa, with good holding pools that fill with lake-run rainbows behind every fresh through the winter and spring. Classic Taupō nymphing water — read the level, time your visit to the falling, clearing flow after rain, and fish weighted nymphs through the runs.
The Tauranga-Taupō drains the Kaimanawa ranges and runs north-west to the eastern shore of Lake Taupō, a quick, clean freestone river of pumice and greywacke that rises and falls with the mountain rain. It is one of the great winter run rivers of the district, its pools filling with lake rainbows behind every fresh.
