Tagliamento

Tagliamento panoramica sul greto al tramonto

Friuli's great braided river and, by wide agreement, the last one in the Alps that still behaves like a gravel-bed river should — spreading, splitting, and cutting new channels after every flood rather than being confined behind embankments.

How to fish it · for Brown Trout
When
Through the FVG trout season — opens the last Sunday of March, closes the last Sunday of September, with a catch-and-release extension to 31 October. Afternoon hatches in spring; early and late light through the summer heat.
Where
Seams and back-eddies where the braided channels rejoin, and the quieter water tucked behind gravel bars. The Tagliamento never holds still for long — a good lie this month may be a dry bar next.
Method
Read the braid before you commit — work the deeper, more stable channels first. Upstream nymph through the faster seams; dry fly in the calmer glides behind bars.
Kit
9 to 10 ft #4, floating line, 12 ft leader to 4 to 5 lb fluoro. A wading staff earns its keep on the shifting gravel.
Why this works
Excellent water temperature is right today, though time of day could be better.

Brown Trout fly box

A fuller Italian trout and grayling box for the southern Alps and northern limestone/alpine systems. It keeps the marble-trout streamer accent, but adds proper grayling dries and bugs, competition nymphs, caddis/olive work, terrestrials, pocket-water dries and alpine lake patterns.

About this water

Friuli's great braided river and, by wide agreement, the last one in the Alps that still behaves like a gravel-bed river should — spreading, splitting, and cutting new channels after every flood rather than being confined behind embankments. The middle reaches through Carnia and past Venzone hold marble trout and grayling in clear, cold water over pale limestone gravel. Read the braid rather than a single channel; a good lie this season may be a dry bar the next.
