How to fish it · for Trout
When
After the 5 May opener through June; autumn.
Where
Set up a broadside drift and cover the water systematically. Work a bushy searching pattern on the bob and drop a contrasting nymph on the point.
The plan
Plan A

Set up a broadside drift and cover the water systematically. Work a bushy searching pattern on the bob and drop a contrasting nymph on the point.

Plan B

If the main plan is not working, switch to a smaller, more imitative pattern fished slower and deeper. A change of drift angle can also make a difference.

Watch for

Keep an eye on changing conditions — wind shifts and cloud breaks can trigger short feeding spells.

Boat — drift

A gentle ripple is ideal for drifting — broadside drift covering the wind lanes should be productive.

About this water

Round Lake lives up to its name — nearly a perfect circle of 693 acres in the Bronson Forest, down a sand road off Highway 21 with nothing at the end of it but a rough launch. It's stocked every few years rather than every spring: mostly splake in the past, browns in 2024 and tiger trout in 2025. That makes it a lake for anglers who like a few bigger holdover fish and don't mind hunting for them. There are campgrounds nearby at Peck Lake and Little Fishing Lake.

Under the surface

A 693-acre, almost perfectly round lake in the Bronson Forest Recreation Site, reached by a sand road off Highway 21. Stocked every few years — mostly splake, with brown and tiger trout in recent years. No services; a primitive boat launch suited to small boats and paddlers.

Wading: Remote sand road access and a primitive launch; open lake, wind
