How to fish it · for Trout
When
From the 5 May opener to mid-June, and September–October. Shallow water warms in midsummer.
Where
Set up a broadside drift and cover the water systematically. Work a bushy searching pattern on the bob and drop a contrasting nymph on the point.
The plan
Plan A

Set up a broadside drift and cover the water systematically. Work a bushy searching pattern on the bob and drop a contrasting nymph on the point.

Plan B

If the main plan is not working, switch to a smaller, more imitative pattern fished slower and deeper. A change of drift angle can also make a difference.

Watch for

Keep an eye on changing conditions — wind shifts and cloud breaks can trigger short feeding spells.

Boat — drift

A gentle ripple is ideal for drifting — broadside drift covering the wind lanes should be productive.

About this water

Picnic Lake is a family lake that happens to be good trout water — a municipal campground, a beach, a boat launch, and ten thousand trout going in most years, alternating brown trout and tiger trout. At six metres deep it warms up in July, so the trout fishing belongs to spring and fall, when the swimmers have gone home anyway.

Under the surface

A 123-acre, 6 m-deep recreational lake 7 km east-north-east of Edam, stocked in alternating years with brown trout and tiger trout (around 10,000 each time). Municipal campground, day-use area, beach and boat launch; yellow perch also present.
