How to fish it · for sea trout
When
Reo season 1 May to 31 July. The Eume's reo are highly water-dependent — fish after rain when fresh fish push up the river. Stocks fragile and rainfall-driven.
Where
Lower Eume below the Fragas do Eume gorge and the estuary above the sea. Pool tails and the tidal margins where reo settle.
Method
Across-and-down on a floating line with small wets — Medicine, small Bibio, Stoat's Tail. Fish the dropping water after rain. Fragile fishery — fish carefully, release with care.
Kit
10 ft #6, floating line, 8 lb fluoro tippet. Spare leader on a wrist spool.
Why this works
Good conditions. Clarity is favourable (85), Prey activity is weakest (37). ⏰ Sea trout become most active after dark, but this stretch closes at 20:24 — before that window fully opens. Fish hard in the last legal hour: overcast skies and warm evenings can bring fish on early even in fading light.

About this water

Beautiful trout and sea-trout river — salmon no longer present. Carves through an ancient Atlantic forest gorge (Fragas do Eume, Special Area of Conservation). Strong brown trout populations in boulder-strewn upper sections; sea trout in lower reaches. The 4-hour response time means morning rainfall yields afternoon fishing. Exceptional natural setting with restricted access preserving ecology.

Sea trout: Variable seasonal (2026) — The Eume holds reo (sea trout) in its lower river and estuary reach. Salmon no longer present. Sea trout are the migratory highlight — present and fishable in the right conditions but stocks are fragile and rainfall-dependent.
