The plan
Plan A

Set up a broadside drift and cover the water systematically. Work a bushy searching pattern on the bob and drop a contrasting nymph on the point.

Plan B

If the main plan is not working, switch to a smaller, more imitative pattern fished slower and deeper. A change of drift angle can also make a difference.

Watch for

Keep an eye on changing conditions — wind shifts and cloud breaks can trigger short feeding spells.

Boat — drift

A gentle ripple is ideal for drifting — broadside drift covering the wind lanes should be productive.

About this water

Lady Lake is east-central Saskatchewan's handy trout lake, 84 acres beside a regional park just north-east of Preeceville. The hatchery alternates tiger trout one year with brook and brown trout the next, so there's usually a mix in the lake. It's shallow, under six metres, which makes it a spring-and-fall water, and in winter it's an ice-fishing lake that stays open all year for trout.

Under the surface

An 84-acre, 5.7 m-deep lake 8 km north-east of Preeceville, partly within Sturgis and District Regional Park, stocked in alternating years with tiger trout and with brook and brown trout.
