How to fish it · for Brown Trout
When
Through the Lombardy trout season — hatches build through spring afternoons, sedges carry summer evenings, and small dark flies matter into autumn. Flows track snowmelt and glacial melt through the warmer months, so expect a daily rhythm as much as a seasonal one.
Where
Long gravel runs and glides through the Valtellina floor, with better fish holding in the deeper seams and under the cut banks below the vineyard terraces.
Method
Upstream nymph through the faster water; dry fly or emerger in the glides once fish are looking up. No-Kill fly beats mandate single barbless hooks and artificials only — comply or fish elsewhere.
Kit
9 to 10 ft #5 for bigger freestone water than the Trentino rivers in this pack. Floating line, 12 ft leader to 4 to 5 lb fluoro. Wading staff useful on the smoother cobble sections.
Why this works
Excellent water temperature is right today, though insect activity could be better.

Seasons & zones
  • Trout varies_by_watervaries_by_water
  • Grayling varies_by_watervaries_by_water

Grayling can be retained in season on the Adda main-stem (minimum 40cm, versus 35cm on other Sondrio waters) with a 15-fish seasonal limit and typically 1-2 per day depending on zone. Retention is banned outright in several defined stretches, including Adda from the Baghetto weir down to the start of the Piateda No-Kill zone — check the current UPS regulation for exact boundaries before keeping a fish.

Rules are set at province or association level — check locally.
