Colzate fiume Serio

The Serio starts about as dramatically as an Alpine trout river can — it drops out of the Barbellino basin below the Passo del Vivione as the Cascate del Serio, the tallest waterfall in Italy on the few days a year it's switched on, before settling into the schist-bedded freestone water that carries brown trout, marble trout and grayling down through Val Seriana.

When
Through the Lombardy trout season — spring hatches build through the afternoon, sedges through summer evenings, small dark flies into autumn. The Serio is smaller and more responsive to rain than the Adda or Oglio, so watch the gauge after storms.
Where
Pocket water and short pools through the upper valley around Gromo and Ardesio; longer glides develop as the river drops toward the lower valley.
Method
Short-line upstream nymph through the pocket water; dry fly in the calmer pools once fish show. Single barbless hooks on any No-Kill stretch — check local signage.
Kit
9 ft #3/4 for tight Alpine pocket water. Floating line, 10 to 12 ft leader to 4 to 5 lb fluoro. Studded boots for the boulder-strewn bed.

About this water

The Serio starts about as dramatically as an Alpine trout river can — it drops out of the Barbellino basin below the Passo del Vivione as the Cascate del Serio, the tallest waterfall in Italy on the few days a year it's switched on, before settling into the schist-bedded freestone water that carries brown trout, marble trout and grayling down through Val Seriana. It's smaller and more intimate than the Adda or the Oglio, properly pocket-water fishing through the upper valley around Gromo and Ardesio, with fish that respond well to careful wading and a short line. Grayling here get an actual season rather than blanket protection — open through the back half of the year — which makes the Serio the better choice of the three Lombardy rivers in this pack if temolo is genuinely the target. Bergamo's high pastures and larch forest crowd the valley sides, and the water stays clean enough, most of the season, to sight-fish the better pools.
