Serio (Val Seriana)

The Serio starts about as dramatically as an Alpine trout river can — it drops out of the Barbellino basin below the Passo del Vivione as the Cascate del Serio, the tallest waterfall in Italy on the few days a year it's switched on, before settling into the schist-bedded freestone water that carries brown trout, marble trout and grayling down through Val Seriana.

How to fish it · for Marble Trout
When
Low light is best — first and last light. April through October, cooler water early and late season bringing the bigger fish on.
Where
The deeper holding pools through the middle and lower valley, where the pocket water opens out — marble trout need more depth and pace than the upper Serio's pools generally offer.
Method
Streamer fishing on intermediate line, working the deeper pools methodically. Treat as catch-and-release throughout. Fish from the net, release with care.
Kit
9 ft #6, intermediate line, 8 to 10 lb fluoro. Compact baitfish-profile streamers suit the smaller pools better than the bigger patterns used on the Adda. Wet net for handling.

Marble Trout fly box

A fuller Italian trout and grayling box for the southern Alps and northern limestone/alpine systems. It keeps the marble-trout streamer accent, but adds proper grayling dries and bugs, competition nymphs, caddis/olive work, terrestrials, pocket-water dries and alpine lake patterns.

  • Regional Lombardy fishing licence plus the appropriate Bacino 8 Valle Seriana permit (via FIPSAS Bergamo or the basin's managing association) required
  • Trout and marble trout close first Sunday of October to last Sunday of February; grayling runs the opposite pattern, closed 15 December to 30 April, open the rest of the year at a 35cm minimum
  • Marble trout should be released regardless of size

About this water

The Serio starts about as dramatically as an Alpine trout river can — it drops out of the Barbellino basin below the Passo del Vivione as the Cascate del Serio, the tallest waterfall in Italy on the few days a year it's switched on, before settling into the schist-bedded freestone water that carries brown trout, marble trout and grayling down through Val Seriana. It's smaller and more intimate than the Adda or the Oglio, properly pocket-water fishing through the upper valley around Gromo and Ardesio, with fish that respond well to careful wading and a short line. Grayling here get an actual season rather than blanket protection — open through the back half of the year — which makes the Serio the better choice of the three Lombardy rivers in this pack if temolo is genuinely the target. Bergamo's high pastures and larch forest crowd the valley sides, and the water stays clean enough, most of the season, to sight-fish the better pools.

    The Bacino 8 prontuario sets grayling's closed period as '15 dicembre – 30 aprile', which is the reverse pattern from trout — grayling season runs through summer and autumn while trout is open, then trout closes for winter while grayling stays fishable a little longer into December. Minimum size 35cm.
