Above Blue Ridge Lake the Toccoa is a free-flowing mountain river, and the national forest water between Sandy Bottoms and Shallowford Bridge is managed as Delayed Harvest from November to mid-May. It is wide enough to cast freely, stocked well through the cool months, and fished catch-and-release with single-hook artificials. Rain moves it fast, and the gauge at Sandy Bottoms tells you when. Come summer the river warms and fills with paddlers, so it's a cool-season trout stream.
