How to fish it · for atlantic salmon
When
Spring from March; grilse from June; main run summer through September. Eske is a small spate system — quick rises after rain, quick drops.
Where
Lower Eske and the lough margins. The river runs small; named pools through the short fishable stretch.
Method
Small doubles 10 to 12 across-and-down on a floating line; small tubes on a sink-tip in spring water. Catch-and-release encouraged across most Irish salmon water.
Kit
10 ft #7 single-hander on the smaller spate rivers; 11 ft switch where the river opens out. Floating line plus light sink-tip. 10 to 12 lb fluoro tippet.
Why this works
Fair conditions based on river hydrology and migration patterns.

About this water

Renowned Donegal sea trout fishery — a short river draining Lough Eske. Season 1 March to 30 September. Best fish usually taken in spring after the opening. Lough Eske provides holding water and the brief river below concentrates fish during runs. Fish it methodically as sea trout stage before entering. A river of beautiful Donegal setting and consistent sea trout opportunity. Char also present, alongside the salmon, sea trout and brown trout. The Eske system encompasses Lough Eske (the primary holding water) and the short outlet river to Donegal Bay. For 2026 this is a catch-and-release fishery under the Wild Salmon & Sea Trout Tagging Scheme — all salmon and grilse must be returned.

Sea trout: Variable seasonal (2026) — Eske is historically a real Donegal sea-trout system but should not be oversold without fresh per-season catch evidence. Donegal-cluster identity (Eske, Eske Donegal lough) is real and valuable but operates at regional rather than national-flagship scale.
