Fish a sensible line-and-fly combination for the height and pace of water.
Kit
13 ft #8/9 double-hander in spate, 10 ft #8 single in low water. Floating line plus a fast-sink tip. 12–15 lb fluoro tippet.

About this water

Fast-response spate river draining the Bluestack Mountains through Glenties and on to Ardara and the Atlantic. One of the finest small salmon rivers in the northwest — steep gradient, short pools, and a three-hour response to rainfall. Spring salmon from February; grilse peak July and August; sea trout from June. Managed in part by the Ballybofey & Stranorlar Angling Association and local syndicates. Owenea and its neighbour the Owentocker (Ardara) make a natural pair for a Donegal trip.
