About this water

The short Culfin drains Lough Fee to the sea between Killary Harbour and Kylemore, in the granite heart of Connemara — the same fishery as our Lough Fee entry. It is open for 2026: salmon from February, sea trout from June. Being a short river off a lough, it answers to the flood, holding running fish only briefly. The Lough Fee and Culfin fishery controls the water; the State Licence is required. Atlantic salmon and sea trout are managed under IFI's Wild Salmon & Sea Trout Tagging Scheme — many rivers are catch-and-release and harvest is allowed only where a confirmed surplus exists, so check the river's current status before fishing.

Hatches & food

A short, acidic Connemara granite river draining Lough Fee — very sparse upwing life, dominated by stoneflies and terrestrials; resident trout are small and the fishery is built on flood-run salmon and sea trout taking on loch-style wets.
