Slow going — pick your moments
River temperature is the limiting factor today, not the flow. Fish dawn or dusk if you go at all, and handle everything with extra care.

How to fish it · for brown trout
When
Through the open trout season once snowmelt drops — late spring through the close. Sierra de Gredos altitude means the Tormes upper fishes later than the lower river.
Where
High-altitude Gredos pocket water through the Tormes headwaters. Pool tails and the seams behind boulders; the river is small intimate water.
Method
Short upstream dry-dropper to wild fish; nymph the deeper pockets between hatches. The Gredos water is clear and demanding — short casts, careful approach.
Kit
8'6 ft #3 to 9 ft #4 — small mountain stream. Floating line, 9 to 12 ft leader to 4 lb fluoro. Studded boots.
Why this works
⚠️ Water at 20.2°C — above the brown trout caution line (18°C). Fish dawn or dusk only. Land it fast, wet hands, no air shots. Otherwise poor — water clarity is in the right range.

About this water

The upper Tormes rises on the northern slopes of the Sierra de Gredos — high-altitude granitic mountain water, cold and clear, dropping through pocket water, tight runs, and pools fringed with broom and pine. The centrepiece is the Coto de Zapardiel de la Ribera, a sin muerte beat from Puente de Navalperal de Tormes to the Garganta del Hornillo confluence. Wild brown trout of native Iberian lineage are maintained by the Centro Ictiogénico de Aliseda de Tormes, preserving Alto Tormes and Tiétar genetic populations. This is the Tormes that most trout anglers picture first: Puente del Congosto and El Barco de Ávila are the practical access hubs.
