How to fish it · for brown trout
When
Nymphing can work through most of the day.
Where
Cover mixed depths.
Method
Start with tight-line nymphs and adjust if fish rise or drift higher.
Kit
9 ft #4 rod, floating line, 12 ft tapered leader to 4–5 lb fluoro tippet.
Why this works
⚠️ Water at 18.5°C — above the brown trout caution line (18°C). Fish dawn or dusk only. Land it fast, wet hands, no air shots. Otherwise poor — water clarity is in the right range.

About this water

South of the Ebro the ground changes: this is the Sistema Ibérico, not the Pyrenees — a country of limestone and spring-fed ravines where the Piedra and the Mesa cut down toward the Jalón above Calatayud. The Monasterio de Piedra makes the character plain: travertine, cold springs, water that comes out of the rock clean and stays cool where it is shaded. There is genuine small-stream trout interest in the higher, spring-influenced reaches, but it is scouting water rather than a destination — flows are seasonal, access is patchy, and the warmer lower reaches turn over to barbel and chub. Go with light tackle, modest expectations, and an eye for the cool, shaded corners.

What would change the calculation
Cooler water — back toward the 10–16 °C ideal band — would lift the score and ease welfare.
The dawn and dusk windows score higher than the midday lull.

Iberian System tributaries of the Jalón, governed by Aragón's section-based trout rules. The cooler spring-fed reaches and karstic ravines hold the salmonid interest; flows are highly seasonal. Confirm the exact coto/free-water status and 2026 dates per beat.
