How to fish it · for Brown Trout
When
Through the Veneto trout season — 7 March to 28 September. Afternoon hatches build through spring; dawn and dusk once summer settles in over the Val Belluna.
Where
Current seams and pool tails through Belluno, and the tighter gorge water as the river narrows toward Longarone. The Piave changes character noticeably along this stretch — wide and even near Belluno, tighter and faster below.
Method
Upstream nymph through the broken water and seams; dry fly to risers in the calmer currents at Belluno. Single barbless on No-Kill and RPS water.
Kit
9 to 10 ft #4/5 for a bigger freestone river. Floating line, 12 ft leader to 4 to 5 lb fluoro. A wading staff is no bad idea on the wider gravel stretches.
