How to fish it · for Brown Trout
When
Through the Veneto trout season, 7 March to 28 September — but remember Bacino 5 closes fishing on Tuesdays and Fridays regardless. Afternoon hatches build through spring; dawn and dusk once the Agordino valley warms up in summer.
Where
Pocket water and boulder-strewn runs below the Lago di Alleghe dam, opening into longer pools as the valley widens toward Agordo and on down to the Piave confluence.
Method
Upstream nymph through the broken pocket water; dry fly to risers where the current settles into glides. Single barbless hook, and remember the season cap of 100 salmonids across the whole basin.
Kit
9 to 10 ft #4 for medium freestone water with Dolomite clarity. Floating line, 12 ft leader to 4 to 5 lb fluoro. Studded boots for the gorge cobble.

About this water

The longest river entirely within the province of Belluno, and the Piave's main tributary — nearly eighty kilometres from its source near Passo Pordoi, through Lago di Alleghe and down the Agordino valley that marks the boundary between the western and eastern Dolomites. Wild brown trout and marble trout hold in the pocket water and deeper glides below Alleghe, managed by the Agordino fishing association under some of the stricter rules in the region — one rod only, no dead bait, a hard seasonal catch limit. A proper Dolomite river, and one that's earned its local reputation the hard way.
