The largest British sedge at around 25mm, and on the Irish loughs — where it is the murragh — one of the great set-piece evenings of the season. Late May into July, late afternoon and early evening. The adults skitter across the surface trying to reach land, and that movement is the whole trigger: a fly given some life will be hit hard, where the same fly sitting still is often ignored.
