Outside the hatch

Nymphs are in the water all year, long before and after the hatch window — the season and temperature figures on this card describe when the adults emerge, not when this stage is available. It very nearly always is.

How fish feed on it

It hauls a case of sand grains and stick around with it, which makes it slow, clumsy and utterly committed to the bottom. Trout take the lot, case included, and a fish grubbing over gravel is very often doing exactly this. Fish it deep and slow — and soft, if you can: a rigid fly gets ejected fast, where something yielding is held long enough to hook.
