How to fish it · for brown trout
When
Through the Castilla y León trout season. Spring olives April through May; summer evenings; small dark flies into the close. The Curueño is high mountain water in León — fishes later once snowmelt drops.
Where
Pool tails and pocket water through the León headwaters. Small intimate Cantabrian Mountains freestone — short casts, careful approach.
Method
Upstream dry to risers; dry-dropper through the riffles. The water reads clear — long leader, fine tippet, careful approach.
Kit
8'6 ft #3 to 9 ft #4 — small mountain stream. Floating line, 9 to 12 ft leader to 4 lb fluoro. Studded boots.
Why this works
Poor — water temperature is working for you, but water clarity is the limiting factor today.

About this water

The Curueño ranks among León's most beautiful rivers — limestone water flowing through uplands with exceptional clarity. Protected EDE sections enforce fly-only regulations on premium beats. Strong mayfly hatches and rapid spate recovery make this 50 km stream reliably productive late March–July. Baetis in spring, strong Ephemerella mid-season reward careful observation and precise presentation.
