How to fish it · for Pike
When
Pike are feeding aggressively as water cools, building reserves for winter. Weed is dying back, concentrating both pike and prey fish into predictable holding areas.
Where
Autumn/winter pike on the fly — big fish season. Pike are putting on condition and take large flies confidently. Fish dropping weed edges, deep channels, and structure. Start with a sinking line and move to faster-sinking as the water cools. Biggest pike of the year come in this window.
The plan
Plan A

Autumn/winter pike on the fly — big fish season. Pike are putting on condition and take large flies confidently. Fish dropping weed edges, deep channels, and structure. Start with a sinking line and move to faster-sinking as the water cools. Biggest pike of the year come in this window.

Plan B

If the main plan is not working, switch to a smaller, more imitative pattern fished slower and deeper. A change of drift angle can also make a difference.

Watch for

Keep an eye on changing conditions — wind shifts and cloud breaks can trigger short feeding spells.

Either bank or boat

Calm evenings can fish well from bank or boat — target rising fish wherever you find them.

About this water

Toplitzsee is better known for what is supposed to be at the bottom of it than for what swims in it, which seems a shame. It is a deep, dark, steep-sided lake in the Totes Gebirge with no road along its shore, and below about twenty metres there is no oxygen at all — so whatever you are fishing for is somewhere in the top layer, which narrows things down. Only four day licences are sold, and the fishing is from rented rowing boats, because there is almost nowhere to stand. Char and lake trout are the quarry, with pike for company; the fly is allowed, single fly on a single hook, alongside spinning and trolling. It is quiet, a little eerie, and about as far from a crowded water as you will find in Austria.
