Altaussee is the sort of lake that makes you lower your voice — clear enough to drink from, which the locals more or less do, with the limestone wall of the Trisselwand dropping straight into it. The fishing rights are old family rights, and the fishery keeps old-fashioned habits to match: tickets from the fishing association in the early morning, in cash, and a short summer season. Arctic char are the heart of it, most of the catch in a normal year, with lake trout for anyone patient enough to go looking. Most people troll. The fly is allowed, though — wet and dry, on barbless hooks — and a calm evening with char dimpling the surface is the moment to be holding one. Bring a Styrian fishing card, get there early, and don't expect to be rushed.
