Sieve

Below the Bilancino dam the Sieve becomes a different river entirely — the reservoir strips out summer's worst heat and turns what was once a warm, sluggish stretch of Mugello water into something a trout can live in year-round.

How to fish it · for Brown Trout
When
Fishable through the reserve's long season, last Sunday of February to last Sunday of November — and more consistently than most Tuscan trout water, because the dam release keeps summer temperatures down when free-flowing streams are struggling. Best sport still clusters around the hatch, late morning into the afternoon.
Where
Zone A, from the powerhouse below Bilancino down to the SP129 viaduct, fishes deep glides and runs typical of a regulated tailwater; Zone B below that, fly-only down toward Sagginale and the Muccione confluence, is more varied riffle-and-pool water.
Method
Nymph or dry-dropper covers the tailwater glides near the dam; switch to dries over risers in the softer water lower down. Barbless hooks and immediate release are compulsory throughout.
Kit
9 ft #4 rod, floating line, 9-12 ft leader to 5X. Weighted nymphs for the deeper glides near the dam; a lighter dry-fly setup for the pockets and riffles further down toward Sagginale.
Why this works
Excellent — conditions well-balanced, with water temperature particularly in your favour.

Brown Trout fly box

A fuller Italian trout and grayling box for the southern Alps and northern limestone/alpine systems. It keeps the marble-trout streamer accent, but adds proper grayling dries and bugs, competition nymphs, caddis/olive work, terrestrials, pocket-water dries and alpine lake patterns.

Permits & access
Permit required — see local rules.
  • Regional Tuscany fishing licence required, plus the ZRS Tail Water Sieve day permit (€12) or annual pass (€120)
  • Barbless or crushed-barb hooks throughout, immediate release mandatory in both zones — this is a catch-and-release fishery by design, not just by rule.

About this water

Below the Bilancino dam the Sieve becomes a different river entirely — the reservoir strips out summer's worst heat and turns what was once a warm, sluggish stretch of Mugello water into something a trout can live in year-round. The Tail Water Sieve project has spent nearly two decades rebuilding a self-sustaining population here: sixteen kilometres of regulated water running down past San Piero a Sieve toward the Muccione confluence, split between a fly-and-spinning no-kill zone immediately below the powerhouse and a fly-only stretch further down. It fishes like an argument for dam tailwaters generally — cold, consistent, technical, and, thanks to the release schedule rather than in spite of it, still fishable in the heat of a Tuscan August, when most free-flowing Apennine streams have shrunk to a trickle and their trout have gone looking for shade.
