Lima

Fiume Lima - San Marcello Piteglio, Pistoia, Italia - 2 Luglio 2023 06

The Lima drops off the Abetone pass and spends forty kilometres getting to the Serchio, most of it through the kind of clear, boulder-strewn Apennine water that makes you want to just stand and look for a while before stringing up a rod.

How to fish it · for Brown Trout
When
Spring and early summer once the Abetone snowmelt settles, then again through autumn. The Lima is a proper torrente — it can run high and coloured after rain, so check conditions before making the drive up the valley.
Where
Pocket water and boulder-strewn runs through the stretches around Lucchio and down toward Fornoli; the no-kill sections hold the more confident fish, less pressured than the open water at either end.
Method
Short, accurate casts into pockets and seams beat long fine leaders on this kind of broken water. Barbless or crushed-barb hooks throughout the no-kill zones, two flies maximum, immediate release.
Kit
9 ft #4 rod for the pocket water, floating line, 9 ft leader to 5X. Weighted nymphs (Hare's Ear, Pheasant Tail, Perdigón) for searching; a few searching dries for the calmer pools.
Why this works
Excellent water temperature is right today, though insect activity could be better.

Brown Trout fly box

A fuller Italian trout and grayling box for the southern Alps and northern limestone/alpine systems. It keeps the marble-trout streamer accent, but adds proper grayling dries and bugs, competition nymphs, caddis/olive work, terrestrials, pocket-water dries and alpine lake patterns.

About this water

The Lima drops off the Abetone pass and spends forty kilometres getting to the Serchio, most of it through the kind of clear, boulder-strewn Apennine water that makes you want to just stand and look for a while before stringing up a rod. Bagni di Lucca sits at its lower end — spa town and fishing water both — and the twenty-four kilometres of river running through its territory, from Lucchio down to the Fornoli confluence, carry a real weight of local fishing history. No-kill water, barbless hooks, and native trota fario holding in the seams behind boulders the size of small cars. It's smaller and steeper than the Sieve, wilder than the managed water below the Bilancino dam, and it rewards the kind of unhurried, watchful approach that Apennine pocket water always demands.
