The plan
Plan A

With limited drift, anchor or fish static from sheltered positions. Work a bushy searching pattern on the bob and drop a contrasting nymph on the point.

Plan B

If the main plan is not working, switch to a smaller, more imitative pattern fished slower and deeper. A change of drift angle can also make a difference.

Watch for

Keep an eye on changing conditions — wind shifts and cloud breaks can trigger short feeding spells.

Bank, sheltered shores

Strong wind makes boat fishing difficult — sheltered bank spots near lee shores will fish best.

Why this score
  • Wind conditions (strong) are not ideal for this water.
  • Temperature (cool) is in the sweet spot for late spring fishing.

About this water

Redman's is a compact Connemara lough — granite edges, the bog rising behind, sea trout that come in from the coast and hold until they're ready to move on. The Zetland Hotel at Cashel Bay operates a boat here; wet fly on the traditional drift, no permit beyond the state rod licence. The fish are not large, but a Connemara sea trout in good condition is worth considerably more than its weight.
