How to fish it · for atlantic salmon
When
Morning into early afternoon.
Where
Pool tails, steadier runs, and any water with pace.
Method
Fish a sensible line-and-fly combination for the height and pace of water.
Kit
13 ft #8/9 double-hander in spate, 10 ft #8 single in low water. Floating line plus a fast-sink tip. 12–15 lb fluoro tippet.
Why this works
⚠️ Water at 18°C — above the atlantic salmon caution line (18°C). Fish dawn or dusk only. Land it fast, wet hands, no air shots. Otherwise poor — water clarity is in the right range.

About this water

The Nissan runs from the Småland highlands to the Kattegat at Halmstad — a compact granite-gneiss river with a responsive spate character that puts fish on the move within hours of rain. Atlantic salmon run from late June; sea trout are present through summer. The water fishes well at medium height on the drop after a lift, with salmon holding in the deeper pool heads and sea trout distributed through the runs. Less celebrated than the great northern Swedish rivers, which in practice means fewer rods on the water and more time in the pools. Atlantic salmon are managed under national rules (Havs- och vattenmyndigheten) — quotas, size limits and catch-and-release apply and differ between Baltic and west-coast rivers; check current rules before fishing.
