Secchia

Fiume Secchia a Casalgrande 16

The Secchia drops off the Tuscan-Emilian ridge above Castelnovo ne' Monti and settles into small, quick Apennine trout water — sandstone runs, pocket water behind the boulders, the odd pool worth a longer look.

How to fish it · for Brown Trout
When
Through the regional trout season (29 March to 4 October) — best in spring before the river drops and warms, and again once autumn rain freshens the flow. Summer means early mornings only; this is a small catchment and it thins out fast in a dry spell.
Where
Pocket water and boulder runs through the middle Secchia around Castelnovo ne' Monti, pool tails below the riffles, and any shaded run under the beech cover.
Method
Short-line nymph through the broken water; dry-dropper once trout start showing in the calmer glides. Barbless is standard on the regulated stretches upstream — carry forceps and fish accordingly.
Kit
8.5 to 9.5 ft #3/4 for a small Apennine freestone stream. Floating line, 9 to 11 ft leader to 5 lb fluoro. Wading boots with decent grip — the sandstone and cobble bed silts up and turns slick fast.
Why this works
Excellent water temperature is working for you, but time of day is the limiting factor today.

Brown Trout fly box

A fuller Italian trout and grayling box for the southern Alps and northern limestone/alpine systems. It keeps the marble-trout streamer accent, but adds proper grayling dries and bugs, competition nymphs, caddis/olive work, terrestrials, pocket-water dries and alpine lake patterns.

About this water

The Secchia drops off the Tuscan-Emilian ridge above Castelnovo ne' Monti and settles into small, quick Apennine trout water — sandstone runs, pocket water behind the boulders, the odd pool worth a longer look. Nothing here is stocked for show. The trout are the native Mediterranean-strain fario the Reggiano valleys have quietly been protecting for years, and they behave like it: spooky, opportunistic, gone the moment your shadow crosses the water. It's a small river and it fishes like one — travel light, keep low, and read every seam before you wade through it.
