A major NE Iceland salmon river about 40 kilometres northwest of Egilsstaðir, actually a combined fishery of five rivers (Fögruhlíðará, Kaldá, Laxá, Fossá, and Jökla itself) managed as one system. A later-running, big-fish river where August is the peak month and the season can extend into September. The combined system offers variety across beats, from fast-flowing rocky runs to slower pools. Basalt bedrock underlies this river. Iceland's salmon are managed conservatively under operator and national rules — quotas, size limits and catch-and-release are widely applied; check the river's rules before fishing.
