The Jökulsá á Brú drains the eastern highlands of Iceland — not the famous spring-fed rivers of the south, but a glacially influenced system with the variable character that glacial water brings. The river runs grey-green in the melt season and clear in late summer, and the salmon that run it are large fish from genuine Atlantic stock. East Iceland is remote in a way the south is not. The rivers here are less well known and less visited, which is either a disadvantage or the point, depending on what you are looking for. The Brú rewards the angler who prepares for what the water actually is.
