How to fish it · for Marble Trout
When
Low light, always. Dawn and last light bring marbles up out of the deep glides near Merano; the rest of the day they sulk somewhere a fly rod can't usefully reach.
Where
The lower river's deeper pools and undercut banks, generally within a couple of kilometres of the Adige confluence. They don't so much share the water with brown trout as take the best of it.
Method
Streamer on an intermediate line, worked slowly and deliberately through the deep water. Single barbless hook, and if you're fortunate enough to hook one, land it quickly and keep it in the net.
Kit
9 to 10 ft #6/7, intermediate line, 8-10 lb fluoro, big baitfish patterns. Wet net for handling.
Why this works
Water at 23°C. This is the line where catch-and-release kills marble trout. Do not fish for them today.
