Foam Hopper

Orthoptera, ADULT
Trout · GraylingSurface

A foam-bodied grasshopper with kicking legs that lands with a deliberate plop. From high summer into autumn, a hopper bounced off the bank is one of the great searching dries.

Fish this when

Warm, breezy summer and early-autumn days near grassy or tree-lined banks, when terrestrials are being blown onto the water.

Why it works

The audible splat-down mimics a hopper crash-landing and pulls fish from a distance; the foam keeps it afloat through a long drift or a dropper.
