Cruncher
Pearlescent body, bright red tag, soft fibres that pulse with each twitch — the Cruncher is a boat fly that earns its keep through a long drifting season on Scottish and English reservoirs alike.
Drifting on a loch or reservoir, on the top dropper or point of a team of wets. Spring through summer when buzzers are the primary food form.
The pearl body suggests a buzzer pupa with gas bubble — the red tag triggers the take. Works because it looks alive and promising rather than exactly right.
Starting points, not rules — depth, presentation and size usually matter more.
Use black, claret or dark peacock under cloud and deeper down. Try olive when fish are feeding naturally on nymphs. A UV or flash-bodied version can help in brighter water or when searching — reduce the flash if fish become pressured or start feeding selectively.
