Booby

Stillwater fry pusher
TroutDeep

Closed-cell foam eyes on a marabou or fritz body — a buoyant reservoir fly that hovers just off the bottom when fished on a fast-sink line. The line goes down; the foam pulls the fly up off the substrate.

Fish this when

Fast-sink or Di-5 line retrieved to the bottom, then fish on a static or figure-of-eight retrieve. The fly hovers 2–12 inches off the lakebed, depending on leader length. Most takes come on the pause or on the lift.

Why it works

The foam eyes create buoyancy that fights the sinking line. On a static sunk leader, the Booby stands up off the bottom exactly where bottom-feeding trout are looking. The undulating body adds movement on even the slowest retrieve.

Choosing a colour

Starting points, not rules — depth, presentation and size usually matter more.

Try black, claret or dark olive in low light, at depth, or when you want a strong silhouette. Switch to white, peach, sunburst or tequila in bright conditions or for freshly stocked fish. Move to olive, brown or black once fish become wary of fluorescent colours.
