Named for the St. Mark's Fly — the big, long-legged black insect that blunders across loch surfaces in late April and May — the Bibio is one of the few wet flies that imitates something specific. Black palmered body with a distinctive red central band, soft hackle. On the Connacht loughs and the Scottish hill lochs when the naturals are blown in by the west wind, it belongs on the top dropper.

Fish this when

Late April and May when St. Mark's Fly is on the water. Also effective through summer as a general dark wet — the red band provokes interest when more subtle patterns are being ignored. Works particularly well when drifting broadside on a wave.
