How to fish it · for Grayling
When
October through February — the cold-water months when the trout are off, and the dedicated grayling window; best on bright, settled winter days. Grayling also come incidentally to the fly through the trout season, but winter is when you fish for them on purpose.
Where
Grayling are the most abundant fish through the middle beats, from below the Cascades at the A38 down towards Brownsmill. Look for them in the steadier glides, gravel runs and deeper holes, where they shoal on the gravel and lift to intercept drifting nymphs.
Method
Short-line or Euro-nymph a small tungsten bug along the gravel, or fish a brace of bugs under a sighter. A small dry over rising fish on milder afternoons still works, with a deliberate, delayed strike.
Kit
10 ft #3 nymphing rod ideal; sighter leader, 4-5 lb fluoro, small tungsten jig bugs #14-16.
