The best water — Glyndwr Fishery's stretch at Dolanog — runs a small, tightly limited permit scheme rather than day tickets. Lower down toward Llanymynech and Meifod, access is a mix of day-ticket club water and farm-let stretches.

About this water

Not to be confused with Lake Vyrnwy, the reservoir at its head — this is the river running out of the dam at Llanwddyn down through the Vyrnwy Gorge, Dolanog, Meifod and Llanymynech to join the Severn near Melverley. Dam-regulated compensation flow keeps the upper river fishing well even when its unregulated Severn-catchment neighbours are running low, and it's held a good, growing grayling population since restoration work began. Wild brown trout run to a genuinely large size on the upper beats.
