Vipava

Vipava — Vipava - Izvir

The Vipava rises as a full-grown karst spring at Vipava town and runs out through its valley with a mixed character found nowhere else in the Slovenian set: salmonids in the upper, chalk-stream-clear reach — marble, hybrid and brown trout, rainbow — grading into barbel, nase, chub and tench as the river warms and slows downstream.

About this water

The Vipava rises as a full-grown karst spring at Vipava town and runs out through its valley with a mixed character found nowhere else in the Slovenian set: salmonids in the upper, chalk-stream-clear reach — marble, hybrid and brown trout, rainbow — grading into barbel, nase, chub and tench as the river warms and slows downstream. RD Ajdovščina holds the upper water, RD Renče the lower. It's the closest thing Slovenia has to a proper spring creek with a working cyprinid tail, which makes it worth fishing twice for two entirely different reasons.
