Under the cone of Yōtei, the Shiribetsu and its tributaries make the most welcoming fly base in Hokkaido for a visitor — good roads, guides, hot springs, and a mix of rainbow, brown and char across water that ranges from broad valley river to cold mountain feeder. Less mythic than Akan or Sarufutsu, and the better for it: a place simply to go fishing in fine mountain country.
Spring-fed and snowmelt water off the volcanic cone of Mount Yōtei through the Niseko valley — broad rainbow rivers below, cold char tributaries above. Snowmelt and typhoon rain set the rhythm; the setting is alpine and the access, by Japanese standards, unusually easy.
