How to fish it · for Hucho
When
Late autumn into winter is peak — November through February when cold water concentrates huchen. Season 1 May to 31 March; April closed for spawning. Check PZW district rules.
Where
Deep, slow runs and the long pool tails of the lower San where huchen sit out the day. Specialist beats — ask the district permit office which sections hold them.
Method
Large baitfish streamers (10 to 15 cm) on a fast-sink line, methodical slow coverage of deep holding water. Strikes are rare and hard — be ready. Catch-and-release mandatory; handle with a wet cradle, never lift.
Kit
10 ft #8/9 single-hander, fast-sink line, 15 lb fluoro. Big baitfish streamers. Wet cradle and long forceps — huchen have plenty of teeth.
