How to fish it · for brown trout
When
Through the open season, April through September. Late spring once the snowmelt has dropped — Carpathian flows take their time settling. Afternoon hatches in summer, midday in cooler months.
Where
Pool-riffle pockets, gravel runs, and the seams behind boulders through the upper San in the Bieszczady. Quieter water away from the famous huchen beats.
Method
Polish-style competition nymphing — Perdigons short-line through the pockets, hare's ear or pheasant tail on the dropper. Swap to dries when sedges or olives come off.
Kit
10 ft #3 nymphing rod for the heavy lifting; 9 ft #4 for dries. 4 to 5 lb fluoro tippet, 12 ft leader.
Why this works
⚠️ Water at 19.4°C — above the brown trout caution line (18°C). Fish dawn or dusk only. Land it fast, wet hands, no air shots. Otherwise poor — water clarity is in the right range.
