How to fish it · for Brown Trout
When
Spring and early summer once the lake's outflow settles, then again in autumn once the tourist traffic through the gorge has eased off. Midday can go quiet in the brightest weeks — mornings and evenings are more reliable.
Where
Pocket water below the gorge walls, the broken runs where current piles against limestone, and the calmer glides near Anversa degli Abruzzi. The trout here favour structure over open water — read the gorge itself as much as the river.
Method
Upstream nymph through the broken pocket water is the reliable method; switch to a searching dry-dropper on the calmer stretches near the reserve entrance. Wading is limited in the gorge proper — plan your access before you commit to a pool.
Kit
9 ft #4 rod for the pocket water, floating line, 9-12 ft leader to 5X. A small box of weighted nymphs (Hare's Ear, Pheasant Tail, Perdigón) does most of the work; carry a few searching dries for the quieter glides.
Why this works
Good water temperature is working for you, but time of day is the limiting factor today.

Brown Trout fly box

A fuller Italian trout and grayling box for the southern Alps and northern limestone/alpine systems. It keeps the marble-trout streamer accent, but adds proper grayling dries and bugs, competition nymphs, caddis/olive work, terrestrials, pocket-water dries and alpine lake patterns.

About this water

The Sagittario drops out of Lake Scanno and immediately goes to work carving the limestone gorge that gives the Riserva Naturale Guidata Gole del Sagittario its name — steep walls, tight pocket water, a river with a genuine sense of occasion. Early naturalists thought its heavily black-spotted trout distinct enough to name separately (Salmo ghigii, Pomini 1941); modern taxonomy folds them back into Salmo trutta, but the fish still carry the marking that started the argument. Wading is limited by the gorge itself in places — read the water from the path and pick your pools with intent.
