A limestone lowland river through Bruree, Croom and Adare to the Shannon estuary, with wild brown trout and a modest run of salmon and sea trout. Rich, weedy water that rewards an early-season and evening approach. Salmon angling is closed for 2026 under the conservation regulations (S.I. 129/2026); in practice this is a wild brown-trout river. Atlantic salmon and sea trout are managed under IFI's Wild Salmon & Sea Trout Tagging Scheme — many rivers are catch-and-release and harvest is allowed only where a confirmed surplus exists, so check the river's current status before fishing.
EPA river-invertebrate monitoring confirms mayflies, stoneflies, caddis, aquatic diptera and freshwater crustaceans (including white-clawed crayfish) are present across the Maigue's monitored segments.
