Passirio

Passirio, fiume a Merano, Südtirol Alto Adige

The Passirio drops off the Timmelsjoch at nearly 3,500 metres, a very long way up, and spends its energy covering some forty kilometres down through the Passeier valley before it slides into the Adige at Merano, past the spa hotels and the palm trees that always look faintly confused to find themselves this far north.

How to fish it · for Brown Trout
When
The season opens mid-February and there's usually something hatching by March if the weather cooperates, which in the Alps is never guaranteed. Fishing settles into the classic pattern after that — spring mornings, summer dawn-and-dusk once the meltwater gets moving, a solid autumn window once the glaciers stop contributing.
Where
The upper valley above Moso/Moos is faster, tighter water — pocket water and short riffles. Down towards Merano the gradient eases and the pools lengthen, the same stretch where marble trout start showing up.
Method
Upstream nymph through the broken upper water; switch to dry-dropper as the valley opens out. Barbless single hook — much of this river runs under one form of no-kill or another, so check the specific stretch before you start.
Kit
9 to 10 ft #4 for a medium Alpine freestone river. Floating line, 12 ft leader to 4-5 lb fluoro. Studded boots for the cobble.
Why this works
Excellent water temperature is right today, though time of day could be better.

Ranked for today
Brown Trout fly box

A fuller Italian trout and grayling box for the southern Alps and northern limestone/alpine systems. It keeps the marble-trout streamer accent, but adds proper grayling dries and bugs, competition nymphs, caddis/olive work, terrestrials, pocket-water dries and alpine lake patterns.

About this water

The Passirio drops off the Timmelsjoch at nearly 3,500 metres, a very long way up, and spends its energy covering some forty kilometres down through the Passeier valley before it slides into the Adige at Merano, past the spa hotels and the palm trees that always look faintly confused to find themselves this far north. The water carries no such confusion — it runs off gneiss and mica schist, and it shows: clear, quick, faintly green in the deeper glides. Brown trout hold through the riffled upper valley; work down towards Merano and the pools deepen enough to hide marble trout, the fish South Tyrol quietly considers its own. Grayling turn up too, often enough that local guides talk about the Passirio's 'Grand Slam' — three species, one river, one reasonably ambitious day. None of it is secret water; it runs through a town. Fish it anyway. Town rivers with proper gradient and proper gravel don't come along often.
