The Makarora is a beautiful clear-water sight-fishing river at the head of Lake Wānaka — braided gravel flats and runs holding brown and rainbow trout you spot and stalk under the Southern Alps. Snowmelt can lift and colour it in spring; it's at its best low, clear and stable through summer. Stealth and good light are everything.
The Makarora runs down a beech-clad mountain valley between the Haast Pass and the head of Lake Wānaka, a clear, braided river of gravel flats and willow-free runs under big peaks. Brown and rainbow trout hold visible in its gin-clear water — classic Southern-Alps sight fishing in spectacular country.
