About this water

The Makarora is a beautiful clear-water sight-fishing river at the head of Lake Wānaka — braided gravel flats and runs holding brown and rainbow trout you spot and stalk under the Southern Alps. Snowmelt can lift and colour it in spring; it's at its best low, clear and stable through summer. Stealth and good light are everything.

Under the surface

The Makarora runs down a beech-clad mountain valley between the Haast Pass and the head of Lake Wānaka, a clear, braided river of gravel flats and willow-free runs under big peaks. Brown and rainbow trout hold visible in its gin-clear water — classic Southern-Alps sight fishing in spectacular country.

Wading: Cold mountain water, snowmelt rises, clear water spooks fish

Hatches & food

Large bush cicadas build through late January on this Western Otago river, bringing middle-of-day surface feeding under bush-lined banks — a direct, dated Fish & Game field observation, though the exact end of the fall is inferred rather than separately confirmed.
