Ireland's best-known modern sea trout water, though the salmon here are a different and more delicate story — declining stocks that ask for catch-and-release as a matter of course, not courtesy. The lough itself, and the short Cummeragh river down to Waterville, can still produce sea trout of real weight, several pounds and better, when water and weather agree — but this has become a condition-sensitive fishery rather than a numbers water, and it pays to know that before booking. Public reports from 2023 to 2025 read exactly that way: worthwhile catches in the right conditions, long quiet spells when the lough sits low, bright, or simply stagnant. Fish it from the boat with light tackle through summer into early autumn; the short river between lough and sea concentrates whatever's running. The Murrough — the great red sedge — hatches in June and is worth building a week around on its own account. For 2026 the salmon fishery is statutorily open, with a declared harvest surplus under the Wild Salmon & Sea Trout Tagging Scheme (S.I. 129/2026), but Waterville manages its own water conservatively — check the local catch-and-release rules on the day rather than assume. Sea trout fishing carries on after the salmon season closes in early October.
