How to fish it · for atlantic salmon
When
Morning into early afternoon.
Where
Pool tails, steadier runs, and any water with pace.
Method
Fish a sensible line-and-fly combination for the height and pace of water.
Kit
13 ft #8/9 double-hander in spate, 10 ft #8 single in low water. Floating line plus a fast-sink tip. 12–15 lb fluoro tippet.
Why this works
⚠️ Water at 18.5°C — above the atlantic salmon caution line (18°C). Fish dawn or dusk only. Land it fast, wet hands, no air shots. Poor conditions based on river hydrology.

About this water

Southern Finland's main salmon river flowing into the Gulf of Finland. Sea trout, salmon, and brown trout in a dam-regulated system that remains productive despite WFD 'Moderate' ecology status reflecting hydropower impacts. The most accessible salmon water from Helsinki. The historic Langinkoski rapids were favoured by Tsar Alexander III — good water yet. Fish passage restoration ongoing. A working river, not pristine wilderness, but reliable. Granite-based upland geology shapes this river. Atlantic salmon are managed under national and shared cross-border rules, with strict quotas and seasonal limits; catch-and-release is widely applied — check current rules before fishing.

Sea trout: Variable seasonal (2026) — The Kymijoki drains into the Gulf of Finland and carries both Atlantic salmon and Baltic sea trout runs. Baltic sea trout stocks are managed through adipose-fin clipping (wild fish released; hatchery fish retained). The river is dam-regulated which limits migration windows. Sea trout runs are condition-dependent — legal but sensitive.
