River Kolpa

A canoe resting on the calm green bank of the Kolpa beneath overhanging willows, forested hills behind.

The Kolpa runs the Slovenia–Croatia border through warm limestone karst country, a properly southern-Alpine feel that's noticeably different from the colder water further north.

River temperature is the limiting factor today, not the flow. Fish dawn or dusk if you go at all, and handle everything with extra care.

About this water

The Kolpa runs the Slovenia–Croatia border through warm limestone karst country, a properly southern-Alpine feel that's noticeably different from the colder water further north. Huchen, grayling and brown trout share it, which makes for an odd but genuine double life — trout and grayling water most of the year, then a winter huchen fishery once the trout season closes and the sulec become the point of the trip.

Slovenian common default: grayling 16 May – 30 November (lipan). Slovenia is permit and fishing district controlled — dates may vary by specific water.
