The Dowagiac joins the St. Joseph at Niles and is the most rounded trout river within reach of Chicago: groundwater-fed and cool enough for Michigan's yearly brown trout stocking to carry through the summer, with steelhead and salmon running up from Lake Michigan on top. Since the Pucker Street Dam came out in 2021 the runs have a long stretch of new river to use. Float it or wade from the county and city parks, and expect the channel to keep shifting through the old millpond above the former dam site as it settles back into a river.
